Sometimes I work backwards by thinking of an outcome before making the thing I’m making. Like the picture above is of the album cover for a song that I was yet to write. And the song that I did end up writing is about my experience of commuting and working in an office, neither of which are things I’ve done. I will be doing both of those things next week though if that counts for anything. I know they say to live in the moment, but I think they’re wrong. If something inspires you then who cares if it’s a thing that hasn’t actually happened.
As I’m new to song writing, much of my composing time was spent thinking and reflecting. I wanted to get the sound and feel of a train in the song so I spent ages at the train station. Just listening to the phut phut phut of wheels going over tracks and stuff.
I found it helpful to write down all of the feelings and ideas I want my music to convey. This can be done with lyrics but mostly I wanted to create a song that will be like an anthem for 2025 so that people will remember where they were the first time they hear my music. I like to think big.
Obviously this thinking big method can lead to feeling massively disappointed when expectations are not met. I still need some fine tuning in this department of creativity. To make the music I used simple software that is available online called Song Maker, it’s part of the chrome music lab. Basically, you colour little blocks on the screen and it makes a sound. It’s a bit like this:
It’s quite fun. Then I set about writing the lyrics. I did come across a problem as I don’t have much of a singing voice. My mentor often gives me advice and once she told me to consider delegating some tasks. So I delegated the singing to her. She sounds pretty terrible but you can hear my lyrics which is the main thing. I will see if I can find a proper music producer and singer as I just don’t think she’s going to manage to do the rap part of the song that are the verses. Here it is and if you’re the sort of person who gets really bad second hand embarrassment, it is best to not watch this! I don't how to do the vide embed thing so here is a link:
